Update from CROP Hunger Walk

Season’s Greetings to our wonderful CROP Hunger Walk team captains and coordinators,

Here is the information you’ve probably been waiting for (I was waiting for a couple of Thanksgiving donations to tie it all up).

2021 Quad Cities CROP Hunger Walk Report

It was another successful QC CROP Hunger Walk that took place on October 3, 2021. While we only had approximately 65 walkers actually walk the route on that date, well over 100 others walked in their neighborhoods, with other church members and neighbors. I would guess we probably surpassed last year’s total of 188 walkers when you count them all.

Many folks opted to donate to the CROP Walk through their Team Captains at their church or temple. The total number of teams participating was 29, one more than last year. Several of the donations were made online, and there is plenty of room to grow there.

Did I mention that this year was our 50th year having the CROP Hunger Walk here in the Quad Cities? We tried to drive home that point throughout the months leading up to Walk Day, and we had many folks send in $50 in honor of our longevity. Many thanks to them, and to the donors who gave us an extra special gift on GivingTuesday (the Tuesday after Thanksgiving).

First Lutheran Church in Moline claimed first place with just under $6,300. Jamie Horst of First Lutheran also walked in his 45th CROP Hunger Walk and he’s hoping to get five more in and then retire.

We award Golden Shoe plaques to all teams that raise at $1,000. Here is the list of those 11 teams that reached that mark. All told, the 29 groups raised $31,799.80, all of which goes to help alleviate hunger locally and globally. Congratulations to all!

We hit a milestone in our collective giving this year. Since 2011, the year I joined the CROP Walk committee, we have raised over $400,000, with $100,000-plus staying here in the Quad Cities to help fund food banks and food pantries, meals on wheels, nutrition education programs, meal sites and soup kitchens, and food served at shelters. Many thanks to all of you who have helped us reach this total.

Our next Quad Cities CROP Hunger Walk, number 51, will be on October 2, 2022. All the details will be sent out around July 1st. We are planning a Golden Shoes recognition event for the 2021 teams that raised over $1,000. Date, time, and location to be determined.  Also, if you would like to serve on our Planning Committee, we’d love to have you (especially if you are from the Illinois side of the river). Just send us an email at qccrophungerwalk@gmail.com and we’ll talk.

Thanks again everyone! Happy Holidays!
