Practicing Faith

January 25th, 2012

God made you a saint. All saints need practice.

Pray daily

God is listening to you. Pray for yourself and others. Pray for the Quad Cities and the ministry of All Saints. Just pray. Of course, prayer is about more than talking to God. It’s also about listening to God, and God has more to say than “Yes,” “No,” or “Maybe.” God is speaking to you.

Worship regularly

God’s dearest intention is to draw us and all creation into living, loving community. For this purpose, God lived, died, and rose again in Jesus Christ. In Christ, God draws us into community through individual prayer, but all the more fully and tangibly God does it in worship—when, gathered around bread and scripture, God makes us the body of Christ.

Read Luke and Acts

This is a time of renewal at All Saints, so we are refocusing on God’s Word. In small groups called “Good Soil groups,” we are sharing our lives with each other, discussing Luke and Acts, and praying together. Learn more by clicking here.

Give generously

God wants our hearts, and God knows the fastest way to our hearts is through our wallets. Financial giving is a concrete act of surrender to God. It expresses our faith and at the same time grows it. It increases our capacity to do God’s work together. Can you imagine planning your giving a whole year at a time? Giving “first-fruits” not leftovers? Giving a proportion of your income, not a fixed amount? Starting wherever you are and growing that proportion each year?

Invite someone

God created us for union with God and communion with each other. Someone you know is lonely for forgiveness, hungry for hope, thirsty for life. What could happen if you invited them to meet God here?

Serve always

We can serve God at all times and in all places. We can even serve here, at All Saints.

Here, the work of the gospel is organized into three coordinating “Ministry Teams” and overseen by the “Congregational Council,” which seemed like a sensible way to organize a list of additional ways you can serve and invest yourself in God at All Saints. By no means is this list meant to set limits. Instead, it’s meant to suggest and encourage. The items starred (*) are Pastor Clark’s top priorities. Then again, God surely has better ideas.

And you surely have interests and gifts to share that don’t find a natural home in what’s listed below. How fantastic! It’s the Spirit’s way of giving us an opportunity to dream and brainstorm together. In that case, talk to a member of the Ministry Team that seems most closely related, or drop Pastor Clark a line.
