Pentecost Summer Theme

Empowered by the Spirit, we live by faith

Theme Write-up written by Matthew Reece, Director of Music Ministries

Our first Pentecost worship theme, “Empowered by the Spirit, we live by faith,” explores the profound connection between the empowering work of the Holy Spirit and the sustaining presence of Jesus Christ as the Bread of Life. This theme invites us to reflect on the teachings of Jesus. Just as bread sustains physical life, Jesus nourishes the soul and empowers believers to live out their faith through the indwelling of the Holy Spirit.

Through word and song, prayers and reflections, we are encouraged to deepen our understanding of how the Spirit enables us to abide in Christ and to embody his teachings in their daily lives. The theme underscores the vital role of faith as the conduit through which the Spirit empowers believers to live authentically and fruitfully as disciples of Jesus. As we engage with this theme, we are invited to partake in the spiritual nourishment offered by Christ, finding sustenance and strength to navigate life’s challenges with courage, hope, and unwavering trust in God’s faithfulness.

This past Sunday marked the Day of Pentecost! Thank you, Julie for the beautiful altarscape to drive home the theme for the season.

Below is a picture of Wanda telling the children all about the Day of Pentecost and the Holy Spirit. Thank you Wanda for your gift of teaching.

Introduction Copyright © 2024 Augsburg Fortress.

When we say God is the triune God, we are saying something about who God is beyond, before, and after the universe: that there is community within God. Our experience of this is reflected in Paul’s words today. When we pray to God as Jesus prayed to his Abba (an everyday, intimate parental address), the Spirit prays within us, creating between us and God the same relationship Jesus has with the one who sent him.

Isaiah 6:1-8 This reading narrates Isaiah’s vision of the Lord surrounded by angels. They sing “Holy, holy, holy,” a song the church sings at the beginning of the great thanksgiving. This liturgical text invites the church and all creation to sing in praise of God’s glory. That glory is God’s mercy toward sinners.

Psalm 29 Worship the Lord in the beauty of holiness. (Ps. 29:2)

Romans 8:12-17 In describing the new life of faith, Paul refers to all three persons of the Trinity: the Spirit leads us to recognize that we are children of God the Father and joint heirs with Christ the Son.

John 3:1-17 Jesus’ miracles prompt Nicodemus to visit him in secrecy. Jesus tells him about being born of the Spirit and about the Son who has been sent by God to save.
