Justice, Righteousness Forever: Wondrous Things
by Chris Fonner
Psalm 72:1-7, 18-19 “Blessed be the Lord, the God of Israel, who alone does wondrous things.” v. 18
God granted justice and righteousness to kings to rule throughout all generations. They led the people to live justly with one another by His righteous love, a wondrous gift to our ancestors and to us today.
Psalm 72 is a prayer to God for guidance and support for each king and king’s son, to judge rightly. God gave mountains, rain, and prospering fields as earthly signs of physical nurture. More so, we reap His abundance as a spiritual reminder of His wondrous love flourishing within us.
Righteousness was fully manifested at the coming of a royal son of David’s line, “Christ the servant”, not the “expected Messiah king.” He is Christ Jesus fulfilling the promise of justice and righteousness, reigning over all the earth. God came to us as Emmanuel, giving himself to all believers — the most amazing and wondrous thing He does for all mankind. We praise Him with all honor, blessing, and glory forever.
At this time of Advent, we live each day with great expectation, awaiting the imminent coming of the baby Jesus. As in ages past, He comes to us as deliverer of the needy, Counselor, Lord, and Savior to save us from all oppressors. Blessed be his glorious name forever.
Almighty Father, thank you for the wondrous things you have done in giving us the precious gift of a righteous life through Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Come now, as ever, in this season as we once again pause to remember your amazing grace in the gift of your justice and righteousness to us all. Amen.
Prayer
God, this is the day you have made.
Come now Lord Jesus, so I may rejoice and be glad in it.
Come now Lord Jesus, so I may surrender to you my agenda and to-do list.
Come now Lord Jesus, so I may receive today your love from the ones you have blessed to give it to me.
Come now Lord Jesus, so I may share today your love with the ones you have blessed me to give it to.
Come now Lord Jesus, so I, all people, and all creation may be awake and ready for the coming of your Son, Jesus Christ, and the glorious end of days.
Amen
