All Saints’ people need to know how this congregation came to have a “Director of Communications” (instead of a “Secretary”) and what the purpose of the position is.
After Betty Gusta retired from the position of All Saints’ Secretary, the Council changed the role description in five main ways. The Council…
- renamed it “Director of Communications”
- added responsibility for worship projection
- added responsibility to be Secretary of Council
- reduced hours per week from 20 to 15
- eliminated the expectation of being present in the office, making working from home an explicit option
The first was more than a name change. It reflected a new orientation or emphasis. While admnistrative tasks are still part of the job, the priority for a Director of Communications is telling All Saints’ story.
This change was made at my–Pastor Clark’s–invitation. The focus is growth. Growth is hoped-for outcome.
Growth happens as All Saints’ people grow our capacity to tell our faith story and the congregation’s story. Growth happens as we grow our invitations to others: inviting people to faith in Jesus and to participate in All Saints’ ministry.
This rests of course on a foundation of deep listening and deep engagement in our neighborhoods and community. And telling the story is key. It’s All Saints’ purpose:
igniting passion for Jesus and boldly transforming our neighborhoods with hope and love
Jesus ignited passion by telling stories, inviting people to participate. And God invites each and every All Saints person to tell God’s story, this congregation’s story, our own stories of faith. Stories invite. Investing in a staff person to help is an investment in everyone and in the future of All Saints.
It’s just like how investing in musicians helps everyone worship, sing, participate, grow their relationship with God. Thanks to Matt and Wanda, it’s easier for eveyone to be a musician!
Investing in a Director of Communications helps everyone tell stories, invite others, participate, grow in their relationship with God. Thanks to Faby, it will be easier for everyone to be a storyteller. That’s the intention, the goal, where we’re headed.
There’s more to say about the Director of Communications position. Maybe you notice the increase in responsibility and decrease in time. I’ll take up that topic in next week’s e-news. I’ll also describe the overall responsibilities.
Peace, PC
