the Word: 22nd Sunday after Pentecost

God speaks this week through these scriptures:

Amos 5:18-24Let justice roll down like waters
Psalm 70 You are my helper and my deliverer; O LORD, do not tarry.
1 Thessalonians 4:13-18The promise of the resurrection
Matthew 25:1-13 The story of the wise and foolish bridesmaids

The prophet Amos calls for justice to roll down like waters.

Paul urges us to encourage one another with God’s promise of eternal life through Christ.

Jesus tells the parable of the wise and foolish bridesmaids, and emphasizes the need to be ready at all times.

We are called to be a reflection of mercy and justice for all people. This coming Sunday we are to “wake, awake,” and join the wise bridesmaids at the table of the wedding feast that Christ provides. Surrounded by the faithful of every time and place, we celebrate Christ’s coming in our midst in the word of life and the feast of victory—the marriage feast of the lamb. Strengthened by this feast, we go out in to the world to share God’s mercy and love with all.
